If you have an elderly loved one living in an elder care facility then you might be concerned about your loved one being a victim of abuse. While most nursing homes and elder care facilities are reputable institutions, there is an increasing belief that elder abuse could be coming from other residents.

Types of Abuse

So what types of abuse can residents be a victim of at the hands of other residents?

  • Verbal abuse including being screamed or yelled at or foul or abusive language
  • Physical abuse due to kicking punching or biting
  • Sexual abuse such as unwanted touching or groping
  • Bullying or other hostile behavior that can be disruptive and disturbing to the resident

Signs of Abuse by Residents

Here are some things to look for if you suspect that your loved one might be suffering abuse at the hands of another resident:

  • Missing or broken personal items
  • Signs that someone has been searching through your loved ones room
  • Marks, bruises or other signs of abuse
  • A sudden shift in your loved one’s behavior
  • Items that you know belong to you loved one being found on another resident or in another resident’s room.

Remember that while the nursing staff is there all day and night, they may not be witness to the abuse when it is happening. Your first response should be to alert the staff to your concerns and see if they can help.
