Home health care is a great way to keep seniors in a familiar surrounding while they age. The problem is, it can be very expensive depending on the type of care that is needed for them. While many people think that Medicare will cover it, the truth is that you may have to seek out other ways to fund home health care.

Medicare’s Lack of Coverage

In general Medicare will only selectively cover home health care services. In many cases they will not cover home  health care aids at all. It is also important to note that while Medicare supplemental insurance will cover co-payments and other Medicare related costs, it will not cover new types of treatment. A good rule of thumb is if Medicare doesn’t cover it, supplemental insurance won’t either.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a program that can help low income seniors pay for healthcare. In fact, Medicaid will cover in-home health care, care aids and for other things like in-home non-medical care. Medicaid is a state run program however, which means that the benefits can vary greatly depending on the state that you live in. Make sure to check with your state run Medicaid office to ensure that the care you are seeking is covered and that you or your elderly loved one qualify for it.

Veteran Aid

Veterans Affairs offer several programs that can assist with in-home health care. Check with your local VA to find out what you might qualify for.
