Caring for an elderly loved one can take a lot of time and effort. While you strive to be there as much as possible for your loved one, it might not always be possible due to the demands of your own life. This is where a geriatric care manager might be able to help out.

What Do They Do?

A geriatric care manager is a person that works in the healthcare field and is familiar with the special needs that elderly patients have. Typically they are someone from the nursing or social work fields, but can also be psychologists or gerontologists who specialize with this type of care.

They can help out with decisions concerning your loved ones including:

  • Picking out and planning home care. This can be any level of home care from simple visits to advanced medical care.
  • Assistance with Medicare and Medicaid; their specialty gives them insight into how these systems work and how to best take advantage of the benefits for your loved one.
  • Taking a look at the particular needs of your loved one and assessing what levels of care are best suited to their individual situation.

Some of these things can be handled by a social worker (if your loved one has a caseworker). Having your own care manager has advantages however and can also help to relieve some of the pressure on an already overworked family and case worker.
