There are many assisted living facilities that offer a variety of services. Knowing what criteria to look for will make your search for an assisted living facility go much smoother. Keep in mind that the most important and deciding factor is not the available amenities the facility has, but the demeanor and behavior of the residents and staff. Observing the interaction between the residents and staff can tell you a lot more about the facility than its accommodations.

Here are some considerations you want to make a mental note of (or jot down on paper) during your visit and tour of a potential facility:

  • Is the facility licensed in accordance with local and state regulations?
  • Is the staff available to address your questions and concerns or do you feel rushed, as if they don’t have the time (or the desire) to talk?
  • Does the staff show a genuine interest in serving you?
  • Are the staff and residents interacting well together?
  • Do the residents appear to be happy and enjoying interacting with staff and other residents?
  • How does the staff handle emergency and non-emergency situations?
  • Are the residents people whose company you would enjoy?
  • Did you see any activities or groups you would be interested in?
  • What are the meal options?

If the facility meets your specific needs and criteria, you should verify their licensing with your local regulatory agency. As an extra precautionary measure, do a Better Business Bureau check for any complaints  lodged against the facility.
