Are you or an elderly loved one moving into a new home soon? Moving into a retirement community or long term care facility is probably different than any other move that you have made in your life. It might seem like you or your loved one will never adjust, but there are some things that you can do to make the move easier.

Ask Plenty of Questions

The staff is not there to simply do their jobs without fielding questions. You or your loved one shouldn’t be intimidated or afraid to ask questions of the doctors or staff. If you want to know when meal times are or how off-time snacking is handled, then just ask! It is the only way that you are going to find out. The more questions you ask, the more you will be able to adjust to your new surroundings.

Getting into the habit of asking questions is not only good for when you are first moving in but over the entire time of your or your loved one’s stay. Staff will know that you are engaged and care about your new surroundings. It can also help you feel less isolated from everyone else there and keep your mind active.

Participate in Your New Community

Most retirement communities or care facilities have a lot of programs and things for residents to do. Many of these are optional, and residents can choose to participate or not. The best way to get to know your new surroundings and neighbors is to participate in the activities that are going on in your community. This can help you to acclimate to your new home and make it feel more like a place where you belong.

While it might not seem like a great idea at first, many of these activities are designed to keep residents’ minds engaged. Doing day-to-day tasks, over and over again, can become tedious, so activities help to break up the days and weeks, giving residents something to look forward to and alternative ways to enjoy the day.

Keep an Open Mind

Moving is always a challenge. Having your belongings put in a new place and experiencing supervision are going to be a big change in your or your elderly loved one’s life. Give it some time, and keep an open mind.

As with any new environment, there are going to be changes that need to be made in order for the move to be successful. Keep in mind that you need these changes to make sure that your or your loved one’s needs are taken care of. With that in mind, the experience can be a good one.
