If you or a loved one you are caring for is a veteran then you may be unaware of some of the benefits that you are eligible to use. One of them is a workshop that is conducted through a partnership between the VA and the National Council on Aging. This workshop is for veterans or caregivers of veterans to help caregivers address special needs that are required by veterans.

Building Better Caregivers

The Building Better Caregivers program is a six week series of workshops. The workshops take into consideration that caregivers and veterans have other things going on, so while they are collaborative there is no set time frame in which they need to be completed.

Classes are around 20 to 25 people in size and are taught in a series of modules. The class provides caregivers and vets a wealth of information on veteran specific issues like:

  • Dementia
  • PTSD
  • Serious brain injuries that cause impairment
  • Care for other serious injuries such as loss of a limb
  • Memory issues

Classes also have advice for caregivers as well. Topics like:

  • Stress management
  • Staying healthy
  • Dealing with difficult emotions
  • Time management
  • Exercise

Qualifications

There is a requirement that anyone that is taking the course must be caring for a veteran who is receiving medical assistance from the VA.
