The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) offers two special VA housing grants for Veterans and Servicemembers with service-related disabilities: the Specially Adapted Housing Grant and the Special Housing Adaptation Grant. These grants offer financial assistance for constructing new homes or modifying existing homes to accommodate special needs.

Qualifying Veterans or Servicemembers must have a permanent and total service-connected disability  and have experienced any of the following:

  • Loss or loss of the use of one or both hands, arms and/or legs
  • Blindness in both eyes
  • Certain severe burn injuries
  • Certain severe respiratory injuries
  • Blindness in both eyes and loss of or loss of use of one leg
  • Loss of or loss of use of one lower leg along with residuals of organic disease or injury
  • Loss of or loss of one leg and one arm
  • Loss of or loss of use of one or more lower extremities due to service on or after September 11, 2001.

Qualifying renovations include:

  • Asphalt or concrete walkways
  • Bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens
  • Garages and passageways
  • Security items
  • Covered porches, ramps and walkways
  • Windows, doors and flooring materials
  • Sliding doors, grab bars and handrails
