As odd as it may seem, your dog may outlive you. Dogs, cats and even other animals can mean a lot to us, especially when we get older and want companionship.

Providing for a cherished pet after you are gone might not be something that would occur to you. Here are some ways to provide for your animal companions after you are gone.

Pet Guardians

In your will you can designate a willing friend or relative to be your pet’s guardian. Along with naming a guardian, you can also provide a sum of money that is transferred along with the pet to handle pet care and medical expenses. Remember to check if the person you name is willing to take on the responsibility beforehand to avoid any confusion.

Set up a Trust for your Pet

Just as with people, a trust can be set up for a cherished pet. The trust would be administered as any other trust, including the naming of a trustee. You can designate a separate trustee and caregiver if you so choose.

Also remember to include what happens to the trust after your pet dies. Animal rescue charities are a great place to donate to help other less fortunate pets.

Pet Care Programs

If you do not have a specific person in mind for your pet, consider one of the many programs that have sprung up. These may be run privately or through organizations like the Humane Society who will find your pet a new caregiver after you are gone.
