Aging in place is a popular concept these days, largely due to the high cost of retirement and assisted living communities. Realistically, few seniors can age in place until the end, but with the support of family, friends, community resources and home health care, it is possible to be cared for at home longer than one might expect. It is not without challenges though. According to a study by the National Association of Home Builders 50+ Housing Council, 35.9% of single-family home owners between the ages of 55-64 reported having difficulty in one physical daily activity area:
- 9% had difficulty getting dressed
- 11% had hearing or vision challenges
- 11.9% had difficulty going out
- 27.1% had difficulty walking, reaching, lifting, carrying, climbing stairs or otherwise getting around the home
- 12.7% had memory loss
- 23.8% had difficulty working
