Have you had your flu shot?
If not, you could be at risk for the aches, pains, and some of the more unmentionable symptoms that go along with the latest flu virus. Just like every year, when the leaves start to turn, and the weather is getting more brisk, advisements to get your flu shot seem like they’re everywhere.
And with good cause – according to the Centers for Disease Control, seniors have the highest risk of catching the flu. (And if I might add, at our age, we tend not to bounce back quite as quickly as we used to!)
Flu shots are the easiest thing in the world to put off. That is, until those first muscle aches start. Before then, it always seems like it’s something you can do “tomorrow.”
But when you get that soreness that just won’t quit, and the shivers and the shakes begin, you wish you could turn back the clock and get that shot!
In my office, the people I see the most are ones that have put off taking extra precaution until “tomorrow.”
But in my office, the consequences people see when they haven’t done any estate planning and have a loved one who’s become incapacitated can be far more devastating than a miserable week with the flu.
Unfortunately for some, “tomorrow” has come and gone, and they have a real crisis on their hands. Nursing home payments are due, stretching from this month on, as far as the eye can see. A frantic spouse and children are sitting in my office with furrowed brows, wondering if I have any good news for them. Because all they seem to be getting, from every direction, is bad news.
It seems like it will never happen to you. But when one out of every 2 seniors spends a significant amount of time in a nursing home, those numbers become very real.
The important thing is not to wait.
Of course you can put off creating your estate plan… just like your flu shot. Many people do.
Unfortunately, many of those same people come back to me in a few short years and are in crisis. They end up spending a lot more money on legal fees and Medicaid spend-down.
