When we first venture out on our own from our parent’s homes we often have roommates that live with us to share expenses and life experiences. As family takes over priority in our lives, roommates leave our minds. Aging in place can actually be made easier with a roommate, or even roommates! Here are some reasons why.
Sharing Expenses
One of the best parts of having a roommate is shared expenses. Seniors living on fixed incomes often have trouble keeping up with the increasing prices of housing and food. A roommate is a great opportunity to share those costs and lessen the effect on a fixed income.
Occupying Empty Rooms
If you are still living in the home that you raised your family in you might find yourself with one or more empty rooms. A roommate is a great way to fill up those rooms with something other than clutter. This allows you to stay in your home and share all those memories with someone else who needs the same, but was unable to keep their home.
Group Activities
Often times, aging in place means aging alone. As we age it gets harder to get around and lots of lonely time in front of the TV is the only alternative. Aging in place with roommates means having someone to talk about things with, make dinner with and go out with.
