The cold weather is almost upon us. If last winter was any indication of how this year is going to be there may be some cold temperatures ahead. These can be particularly challenging for the elderly. Here are some tips for keeping your loved ones safe during the cold weather.

Make sure of the Footing

Ice and snow make walkways slippery. If you are planning on going out in cold weather with your loved ones, or if they are going to be walking around their assisted living facility make sure they are prepared. Falls are much more difficult for the elderly to recover from than for younger people.

No slip shoes provide good traction for anyone moving around on slippery surfaces. Railings for stairs or other sloped walkways are essential. Finally having someone to help them in dangerous conditions can be the difference between a fall and a safe fun day out.

Keeping Warm

All of our bodies have the ability to regulate the temperature. However, as we age our bodies are less able to deal with extreme swings in temperature. Certain medications can enhance this making it even harder. This means that extremely cold temperatures can lead quickly to hypothermia or frost bite.

Make sure that when venturing out in the winter your loved ones have plenty of layers. Gloves, hats and scarves are a must.
