For many, the idea of aging in place, or living at home until death, is not practical. In today’s world, most adult sons and daughters are bogged down with two income households, families and activities that prevent them from being able to move back home and care for aging parents. The traditional model of moving mom or dad into the children’s home to age is becoming less common. If aging in place is not an option for you or a loved one, there are many viable options available to chose between.
Senior Apartments and Condos
For many, peace of mind is all that is needed, and senior apartment or condo communities can be a great option to consider. They provide a level of independence by allowing couples to stay together and providing community based activities and outings. They also have visiting nurses or staff nurses that ensure that residence have access to a qualified professional should a fall or health related problem occur.
Assisted Living Facilities
For those that need extra assistance, including those with memory challenges, assisted living facilities provide a structured environment that can meet a variety of daily care needs. The type of services available will vary from facility to facility, but often, assisted living facilities are attached to nursing homes, making the transition less stressful when it needs to occur.
Nursing Homes
Nursing homes have the highest cost of the out of home living options, and tend to be a last resort for those in need of temporary medical related care, more severe forms of Alzheimer’s and dementia and those facing the end of life. Nursing homes provide skilled medical care, and may offer social activities, health permitting.
