Continuing care retirement communities, or CCRCs, provide a multi-level care option for residents, meaning as the needs of the individual change, the level of involvement and care of the community increases accordingly.

The typical set up for a CCRC is a mixed use facility, with independent housing similar to what is found in a retirement community, assisted living facility style private rooms and nursing home rooms that are closer to a hospital setting. The services provided at each level may be billed separate to a monthly fee, or the facility may have a sliding scale based on need.

These types of communities are an excellent option for anyone with Alzheimer’s, dementia or a degenerative disease, as the senior can maintain their social and support network they establish early on, and feel comfortable with their surroundings as the disease progresses.

CCRCs take a lot of the stress off of the family, as a contract is signed upon entry, meaning the resident has permanent long-term care needs met throughout their remaining years. Be sure to take the contract to a qualified attorney before signing, and having your attorney look at your financial plans is also advisable.
