Residents in assisted living facilities (ALFs) generally require less care and are typically more independent than nursing home residents. However, they share one sobering reality. Both groups are susceptible to potential abuse from staff or family members. Assisted living abuse may occur in the form of neglect or physical, psychological, sexual or financial abuse.

  • Neglect – Typically occurs as a result of under-staffing. Residents may become dehydrated, malnourished, or develop rashes or sores. They may be living in dirty and/or foul-smelling living quarters.
  • Physical abuse – Involves unwarranted actions such as hitting, kicking, pushing or slapping. May also involve excessive or improper use of restraints, denial of food or drink or forcibly feeding a resident certain foods or liquids.
  • Psychological abuse – Degrading, harassing or verbally assaulting a resident. May also involve “babying” a resident or subjecting a resident to “silent treatment” as punishment for something he or she has done.
  • Sexual abuse – Non-consensual sexual acts between an individual and an assisted living resident.
  • Financial abuse – Financially taking advantage of a resident. May involve unauthorized access to his or her funds or property for the benefit of another individual.

If you suspect assisted living abuse, immediately report it to the proper authorities. Also consult an elder law attorney to learn what legal options you may have.
