Board and care homes are similar to assisted living facilities, except that they are smaller in size and cater to a smaller number of residents. They are regular houses in residential neighborhoods and they typically have no more than 10 people living there at a time. Board and care homes are are also known as adult family homes, adult foster care, group homes, personal care homes or residential care homes. They are required to be licensed in most states.
Board and care homes are ideal for seniors who need 24-hour supervision and need assistance with basic personal care and daily living activities. Staff may assist with administering medication or reminding residents to take their medications, but they may not be able to provide skilled nursing assistance. Residents receive three meals daily and get help with:
- Bathing
- Hygiene and grooming
- Getting dressed
- Toileting
- Eating
- Housekeeping, laundry and transportation to appointments
- Managing money and health care
