Board and care homes are primarily for seniors and other individuals who want to maintain their independence but need some assistance with daily living. While board and care homes provide some of same services as an assisted living facility, they may not be an option for everyone. The most significant advantages to living a board and care home are:

  • A relaxed, home-like and unstructured environment
  • Smaller number of residents, allowing for more personalized attention and interaction from staff
  • It costs less to live in a board and care home than it does to live in an assisted living facility.

Depending on your wants and needs, a board and care home may not be the best choice for you because:

  • The smaller number of residents may not appeal to seniors or other individuals who enjoy meeting and socializing with new people.
  • Privacy may be limited. Residents may have their own private bedroom, but they typically share common areas such as a dining or living room.
  • There are fewer amenities, activities and recreational opportunities than what you would find in  assisted living communities, making board and care homes an unattractive option for seniors who prefer a greater variety of recreational and social activities.
