Unfortunately, as more attention is given to elder law, nursing home care and estate planning, more and more people flock to the industry. While many are ethical folks that are committed to helping you and your family through a very difficult time, some are also just arriving on the scene in hopes of making a quick buck. Not every insurance plan, product or service is created equal. You don’t have to go far to find a news story about some venerable elderly man or woman being taken advantage of by a crook they thought was selling them a product they needed. When dealing with the estate, you can’t afford to make a mistake and trust the wrong person.
So, how do you know who you can trust?
Referrals are the best way to find a great professional. Ask friends who have dealt with similar situations. Inquire at your church or senior community center. Often the churches and community centers will keep a directory of other church members that provide professional services, or they may know someone who has recently dealt with an aging parent that can recommend services.
Contact the local bar association and ask for referrals. Check with the Better Business Bureau for any complaints, and do a simple Google search and see what type of reviews other clients have left for the professionals you consider doing business with. Never just select a name from a phone book without doing your homework first.
Meet with the professionals you discover, and always feel free to take some time to digest the information they provide before making a decision you might regret later. Ask questions along the way and always understand documents you are asked to sign before signing.
Estate planning and arranging for long-term care is an emotional and stressful situation for all involved. Having the right professionals on your side can make the entire process easier to handle, and allows you to focus on what matters most: your time with your loved one.
