Alzheimer’s is a debilitating disease that currently affects about 35 million people. A recent report detailed the expectation that costs associated with Alzheimer’s may triple by the year 2050 if no cure for the disease is found. Nearly all victims of Alzheimer’s will have need of some form of long term care.

The average length of care is four to eight years after diagnosis; however, some may need care for up to twenty years. These people and their families will likely experience a greater financial and legal burden due to the disease and cost of care.

Caring for Loved Ones with Alzheimer’s

Part of the report details what can be done to improve the quality of life for the people who are victims of this disease as well as make long term care more affordable.

In order to ease these burdens, the committee recommended:

  • Increasing efforts to improve the quality of life for patients and their families
  • Greater funding for research for medicines to help with symptoms as well as research into a cure
  • Citizens need to urge their representatives in government of the importance of furthering research and quality of life improvements through enhanced government programs
  • Families and communities will need to take a more active role in helping seniors
  • Heath insurance and medical care systems need to be better equipped to handle an aging population and the needs of victims of Alzheimer’s
  • Caregivers need to be properly recognized for the services they are providing and funded to handle the needs of their patients
