Nursing homes are facilities that provide patients a private or semi-private room, all meals, personal (non-nursing) care, nursing care and a variety of medical and therapy services. Most typically, nursing home care is reserved for patients with chronic conditions that require long-term care or for patients that need round the clock care for a shorter period of time following hospitalization. Patients are typically placed in a nursing home because they need help with multiple activities of daily living (ADLs) such as:

  • Eating
  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • using the restroom
  • transferring from the bed to a wheelchair

Nursing homes also provide nursing care such as administering medications, care of wounds and surgical sites, physical therapy and occupational therapy. They also provide social and recreational activities for residents.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 66% of nursing home patients are female, and 84% of residents were over the age of 65. The average age of nursing home residents was 82.7 years of age. 87% of nursing homes provide Alzheimer’s or dementia care, and 80% of those charge the same rate for a patient with these diseases as they would for any other resident without cognitive difficulties.
