What do you do when your elderly loved one needs some help with daily living activities, but not to the degree where they need to go into a nursing home? An adult day care center may be worth looking into, but is it a viable option for your loved one and for you as their caregiver? Individuals who would be good candidates for an adult day care center are those who:
- Want companionship and would benefit from the functional assistance an adult day center provides
- Are relatively mobile but needs a cane, walker or wheelchair to get around
- Are continent (in most cases)
- Are cognitively or physically impaired but do not require 24-hour supervision
- Cannot safely be left at home alone
- Lives with someone who is frequently away from home for work, school or other reasons
- Are in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease
If any or all of the above criteria applies to your loved one, you can contact your local Agency on Aging or search the Eldercare Locator at the Eldercare.gov website for information on adult day care centers in your area.
