There are so many choices available when looking for nursing home care. This can make it hard to figure out what is what. Fortunately, there are a multitude of resources for people who need assistance.
Administration for Community Living (ACL)
This is part of the federal government that provides Medicare patients with information and help when choosing nursing homes and other extended care facilities. They maintain an online system called the Eldercare Locator, located at eldercare.gov that provides all sorts of information on support and services available from the federal government.
Long-Term Care
This is an individualized service that assists individuals who are residents of nursing homes, board and care homes or assisted living facilities. They work with families to improve the life of residents of these facilities. This service can help you resolve any individual issues that your family might encounter.
Representatives might visit homes and speak with residents to determine the quality of care. They also work to provide information on particular nursing homes like how many complaints a home might have had, the nature of those complaints and how the issues were resolved.
Quality Improvement Organizations
There are also several groups that work to improve the quality of care in nursing homes and other assisted living facilities. These groups are organized through Medicare at medicare.gov/contacts or through the 1-800-MEDICARE help line.
