Being a full-time caregiver can be a stressful situation. As much as you want to help your loved one, sometimes you feel like you just can’t live up to the responsibilities. However, the idea of placing your loved one in a home is unthinkable. There are options, however, that can temporarily allow you to take care of basics for yourself and your family, while allowing you to recharge the batteries to continue your caregiving responsibility.

Respite care is an option for helping a caregiver, which many people don’t consider. This sort of care allows you to remain a primary caregiver for your loved one, while allowing you to take time off to rest, run errands, and recharge so that you can continue to properly provide for your loved one. Many Nursing care and assisted living facilities will offer respite care for a weekend up to a week or longer, with most requiring a minimum stay. Advance notice varies by facility and can be only a few days, or can be up to a few weeks.

Nursing Care and Assisted Living Facilities

As with any medical or caregiving service, it is important to plan ahead. Room and board is usually included in the cost. Other services beyond basic care are often restricted or carry with them an extra cost. You should never assume that a facility can take on a new patient—always check with your choice of facilities to ensure that they have room.
