The elderly are particularly vulnerable to abuse. There are many different forms that this abuse can take including neglect, physical abuse and financial exploitation. Abusers come in many different forms from ill-intentioned care takers to scammers looking to make a buck. Here are a few of the types of elder abuse to look out for you or an elderly loved one.

Neglect

Neglect is a one that can come in several forms. One of the most difficult to detect is self-neglect. This is when an elderly person is just incapable of taking care of their basic needs due to physical or mental limitations. This puts them in danger for illness or injury.

A second form of neglect is when an outside agency that has been tasked with the care of an elderly individual fails to perform their duty. This could be anyone from homecare givers to nursing homes that fail to provide the essential care an elderly person needs.

Physical

This manifests itself in the same way it would with anyone. Hitting, slapping or even rough handling that causes injury to an elderly person. This type of abuse can be caused by any number of people including caregiving agencies, individual care givers or even frustrated family.

Exploitation

Taking advantage of the elderly for financial or property gain is considered exploitation. This can include stealing money, credit cards, valuable property like jewelry or identity theft.
