With tax season upon us it is once again time to file your taxes. Unfortunately the scammers of the world also know that it is tax time and are looking to take full advantage of anyone they can. Don’t fall prey to these criminals. Not only could you lose money you could also inadvertently give away your identity. Dealing with identity theft could ruin your credit now and even cost you long term through your retirement funds. Here are a couple common scams to look out for.

IRS Impersonators

These criminals may call you on the phone or can even sometimes show up to your front door. In either case they will often say that they are IRS auditors and you have been found in tax default. As a result, if you wish to avoid prosecution you will pay a certain amount to them.

Remember these people can have a disturbing amount of information about you. Don’t be surprised by that. Also remember the IRS does not work this way. Without official notification in the mail there will be no visits or calls from auditors. If anyone shows up or tries to convince you they are from the IRS seek verification before going any further.

Phishing by Email

Phishing is a word used to describe emails that are sent to you that look official but are really there to steal your personal information. These can be anything from tax software sites to official IRS sites.
