There are a lot of horror stories about how awful Medicare can be. As with any program there are issues with Medicare. In general the system works very well and provides excellent care for millions of seniors. If you are worried about going onto Medicare, then here are some things that should provide you with a little piece of mind.

No Need for Referrals

If you have previously been on an HMO or similar type of insurance then you are probably used to the process of a referral. This is where you must first go to a primary care physician (chosen by you from a list provided by your insurance) before you can go to a specialist.  This is not the case with Medicare.

With Medicare as your insurance provider you are able to visit any specialist or care provider that you would like. Some procedures and services require authorization but in general you get to choose whom you would like to see and when.

No More Networks

Unlike insurance providers that have doctors and hospitals that are in network and others that are out of network, Medicare does not have that issue. You no longer have to worry about what doctor or hospital you are going to see and if it is going to be an additional cost to you. Medicare is a national program so if you travel frequent or live in two states there are no issues going to any doctor or hospital you would like.
