Are you looking for a way to keep yourself or an elderly loved one active? Many medical experts think that staying active as long as you possibly can is the best way to keep healthy and improve your quality of life. Here are some ideas for you or your elderly loved one to stay active.

Go Swimming

Whether you are spending time in a hot tub or a swimming pool, swimming is a great way to keep active as a senior. Swimming is a full body work out that is also low impact, meaning that the exercise does not put stress on joints or muscles like other activities can. Swimming is a great way to cool off in the summer as well!

Take a Walk

Walking is a great way to keep fit. Spending a half hour or more walking a day will keep muscles healthy and joints moving. It may not even feel like exercise if you do it often enough. If you want to walk outside, make sure to stay out of the peak sun for the day. Walk in the early evening or morning. If weather does not want to cooperate, then find a good place indoors to walk. Malls can be a great place to get out for a walk.

Clubs

Most cities and suburbs have all sorts of clubs. If you have a specific interest, join a club that lines up with it. If you are looking for something to do, why not start a new hobby? You can learn and get tips from people who have been doing it for years.

Gardening

Depending on what the climate is like where you live, you may be able to garden year-round, or it may be a summer only and weather dependent activity. Any way you look at it, gardening can be a great way for seniors to stay active. Not only does it allow you plenty of time outside in the sun and nice weather, but it can also provide plenty of exercise in walking, moving and digging.

As with any outdoor activity, remember to practice in moderation. If you begin to feel fatigued, head inside and take a break.

Volunteering

How many times have you said to yourself, “I would really like to help that organization out?” Retirement is great time to spend volunteering your time for a charitable or other organization that you believe in.

Volunteering not only gives you an outlet for all of the skills that you have built and maintained over the years, but it is a great way to be social, meet people from all walks of life and remain active in your community. Look for organizations that you believe in, and spend some of your time with them.
