If you are providing care for an elderly loved one you may be wondering if it is possible to receive payment for that care. Often this type of in-home care requires putting jobs or careers on hold, but bills still need to be paid. Here are some options for receiving payment for providing care for elderly loved ones who require home care.
Medicaid Waivers
Since Medicaid is run by states this can vary from state to state, however many states allow a waiver to be filed that permits patients to receive home care instead of staying in an assisted care facility or nursing home. Many states allow patients to choose their care provider. In this case they can hire their adult children, relatives and even spouses in some states to care for them.
Medicaid Personal Care Services (PCS)
These operate in approximately half of the state’s Medicare programs. PCS allow direction of the patient to whom they wish to provide the personal care services to. Much like the waivers, this means that if the state allows, family members or friends could be hired to provide the personal care.
PCS differs from waivers in that they are much more restrictive on their eligibility requirements. This means that the income limits will be much lower for waivers than for PCS. These programs are also entitlements, unlike waivers which are not.
