The idea of retirement appeals to all of us. Having time to do what you want, when you want an not having to worry about answering to a job or other commitments is a wonderful prospect. Choosing to retire early can have consequences that you are not thinking about.

The Effect on your Spouse

If you choose to retire before you realize your full benefits are available, and you are the primary wage earner in your family, you could be having a future effect on your spouse. Choosing to retire early means that you will be reducing the amount of benefits that are paid to you on a monthly basis. While you can start receiving benefits earlier, this means that the amount of the benefit is reduced. This means that a spouse who is depending on those benefits is going to receive less in the future.

Waiting can Make More Sense

Waiting those few short years, if you are able, can mean a large difference in the future benefits you and your spouse are going to receive.  If left alone, your spouse my depend highly on those benefits. Make sure that you use all of the resources available to you and your spouse when planning for the future. You may find that putting off retirement for a few years could provided countless future benefits.
