When a loved one has Alzheimer’s, it can be difficult to separate emotions from logic to determine what type of care is really in the best interest of your loved one. The decision to place your loved one in a nursing home is especially difficult. We hope that these questions will assist you in getting a clear picture of your loved one’s current situation, and help you determine the right care options.

  • Is 24-hour supervision necessary?
  • Do you feel comfortable with your loved one living alone or with his or her spouse as a primary caregiver?
  • Does your loved one need special care?
  • Does your loved one need help remembering to take medication?
  • Does your loved one need help using the restroom, bathing, eating or dressing?
  • Does your loved one want to move around or walk but need direction and assistance to do so?
  • Does your loved one have other medical issues, such as diabetes or heart disease?
  • What type of financial resources are available, and how will the costs of care be covered?
  • Is there a family member willing and able to provide the care your loved one needs?

Once you have the answers to these questions, talk with your loved one’s healthcare provider, social worker or a member of your local Alzheimer’s Association chapter or another community agency to get an unbiased opinion of the situation.

Keep in mind most people need a continually increasing amount of support and care as the disease progresses, so consider long-term care needs as well as immediate needs when planning for your loved one’s future.
