If you are looking for an alternative to home care for yourself or a loved one, you might want to consider an adult day program. Adult day programs are a way to save costs on home care while still providing a level of care that is needed.

Adult day programs come in three general types:

  • Programs designed to meet the medial needs of an individual. These programs can provide minimal medical care during the day as well as providing assistance with every day activities.
  • Programs that are designed to meet socialization needs. For housebound individuals, one of the most important parts of their care can be getting out and socializing with others. There are programs designed specifically for this purpose that will allow your aging loved one to remain involved and social if they cannot get out on their own.
  • Programs that are designed for specific disease needs. This could be for treating things like Alzheimer’s or dementia, where care is needed to ensure safety.

Most adult day programs operate during typical business hours, 8am to 6pm. They provide activities, meals and other comforts that home care would provide. These programs can be small and held at a community center type environment, or can be part of a larger program.

There may even be programs that offer weekend hours.
