Veterans health benefits are administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Eligible veterans can receive services that may include hospitalization, prescriptions, preventative care, diagnostic and treatment services, long-term care and nursing home care. Qualifying veterans must be enrolled in the VA health system, and eligibility is contingent upon criteria such as length of service, nature of the discharge from service, income, if there are any service-related disabilities and available VA resources at one’s disposal.

Veterans who were dishonorably discharged are not eligible. Veterans must have two years of active duty military

service, with some exceptions for those who have service-connected disabilities or have had hardship discharges. Veterans who enlisted prior to September 7, 1980 or  entered active duty before October 17, 1981 do not have to meet the length-of-service requirement.

There are other exceptions to the eligibility requirements for health benefits. More information on these exceptions and how to apply for these benefits can be found on the VA website or by calling 1-877-VETS (8387).  An elder law attorney can also assist you in completing your application, should need help doing so.
