If the veteran is deceased and a spouse survives the veteran, the widow/widower can also qualify for the Special Monthly Pension if he or she is over 65 or disabled. The amount of the Special Monthly Pension is based on the level of disability. The levels of disability are: aged over 65, Housebound, and In Need of Regular Aid and Attendance.

The amounts of the Special Monthly Pension are as follows:

A veteran’s widow aged over 65, but not housebound and not requiring regular aid and attendance

  • Amount of the Special Monthly Pension for veteran’s widow with no dependent: $648.00 per month.
  • Amount of the Special Monthly Pension for veteran’s widow with one dependent: $896.00 per month.

A housebound veteran’s widow

  • Amount of the Special Monthly Pension for veteran with no dependent: $837.00 per month.
  • Amount of the Special Monthly Pension for veteran with one dependent: $1,048.00 per month.

A veteran’s widow requiring regular aid and attendance

  • Amount of the Special Monthly Pension for veteran with no dependent: $1,094.00 per month.
  • Amount of the Special Monthly Pension for veteran with one dependent: $1,306.00 per month.

For each additional dependent, add $174.00. If the widow remarries, they are not eligible for the Special Monthly Pension
