For veterans that served during a period of war or conflict, there is an almost unknown benefit that pays out a monthly pension that is available, and extends to the spouse or widow of the veteran, as well. Few of those who qualify for the benefit know of its existence, and fewer still understand how it works.

Depending on the area you live in, it may be referred to as:

  • Non-service connected disability pension
  • Non-service connected pension
  • Veterans pension program
  • Special monthly pension
  • Improved pension
  • Special pension
  • VA pension
  • Aid and attendance

For the sake of the upcoming blogs, we’ll refer to it as the “Special Monthly Pension.”

The Special Monthly Pension is a benefit program provided by the Veterans Administration, or VA. The program is needs-based and helps eligible veterans and their spouses or widows who need financial assistance because of limited assets and incomes. It is geared to help those who are experiencing hardships due to illness, injury, or disability.

Because the VA offers so many benefit programs, it can be hard to find someone at the VA who really knows the ins and outs of the program, which is why it is recommended that you seek the help of an experienced attorney before attempting to apply. Over the next few blog posts, we’ll take a closer look at the benefit and how to qualify.
