If you have VA loan and a natural disaster has left your home uninhabitable, there are steps you can take to get much needed assistance in a timely manner.
- Calling 1-800-621-3362 or visiting www.DisasterAssistance.gov to apply for disaster assistance. Also visit www.fema.gov to research additional resources (e.g, grants, low interest loans and other housing assistance) for which you may qualify and obtain from other agencies associated with the recovery effort.
- Losing your home to a natural disaster doesn’t take you off the hook for your mortgage payments. Contact your mortgage company to ask about a forbearance or loan modification if you cannot make your mortgage payments. You can also contact the VA and speak to a VA loan specialist to discuss your options. An elder law attorney specializing in Veterans benefits may also be of assistance.
- File a claim with your insurance company, but don’t hastily accept any settlement they offer. If you have repairable property damage, have an engineer conduct an inspection for structural damage. Get at least two estimates from qualified contractors. If you had a VA-specially adapted home, call 877‐827‐3702 to see if there are remaining grant funds available for repairs.
- Immediately notify your regional VA office and post office of your new address if you can no longer receive mail at your regular mailing address, especially to ensure there is no interruption in the delivery of any monthly benefit checks you receive.
The VA website has additional information for lenders and mortgage servicers in regards to VA policies on VA loans and natural disasters.
