Medicare is an important part of every senior’s retirement plan. In fact, if you are retired then Medicare is one of the only ways that you can get health care paid for. That is why being ready for your enrollment is so critical. Here are some things to remember about enrolling for Medicare.

You will Not Receive a Notice

While it is a government program, and they are aware of your age, you will not get a reminder from the federal government saying that it is time to sign up for Medicare. The one exception to that rule is if you are already receiving social security benefits. There is no automatic reminder, so be sure you know when it is time to enroll and when you need to have your paperwork ready to file.

Enrollment Periods are Tricky

There is nothing easy about Medicare. Yes, it will provide excellent medical coverage for you, but it is always changing and can be easily misunderstood. That is why it is critical that you understand when the open enrollment period as and what age that you must sign up for coverage.

If you are renewing your coverage from the previous year, open enrollment is usually late in the year, between October and December. If you are just turning 65, then you will get your own special enrollment period, but just that one time.
