There are a lot of unscrupulous people who look to take advantage of anyone out there. The elderly can be particularly vulnerable to scammers who seek to take advantage of them by stealing their identities as well as stealing money outright. Being aware of the most common types of scams that can be run on the elderly is the best defense in not being taken advantage of when scammers show up. Here are a few scams that take advantage of the elderly how to best avoid them.

Medicare Scams – Clever scammers will call Medicare recipients and say they are from an official sounding government agency like the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. They will say that they need the victim’s Medicare ID in order to check on something. This ID just so happens to be their Social Security number. Never reveal this number to anyone who shows up asking for it. Official agencies would never ask for this information.

Counterfeit Drugs – Low cost prescription drugs are something that many seniors search the internet for. Many hard to believe offers are, in fact, not true. These drugs can actually be harmful. Only buy drugs from reputable pharmacies.

Debt of Deceased – Scammers will take advantage of emotionally compromised and grieving seniors who may have just lost a close loved one. They will say they represent a debt holder for the recently deceased and are attempting to collect.

There are many other types of scams and scammers out there. Contact Stano Law Group if you think you or an elderly loved one is a victim of one of these or other scams.
