The cost of healthcare keeps rising. If you are a senior, then this can be even more troublesome. As you age, you need more medical care than you have previously in your life. Some statistics say that as high as three in five bankruptcies are due to people being overwhelmed with medical bills. Fortunately, there are plenty of factors that you can control to prevent this from happening. Here are a few of the things that you can do to avoid financial issues due to medical bills.

Are Those Bills Really Yours?

Nearly half of the medical bills that are sent to patients have at least one error on them. Whether it is a test that you didn’t have that you are being charged for, or if you are being billed for something different than what you were actually treated for, you should be sure to go over each medical bill you receive carefully.

Keep track of all of the services that your medical providers are providing to you, and then check them off as the bills for them come in. Make sure that what your provider is billing you for is in fact the procedure that was performed. Finally, make sure you are not being billed twice (or three times, or four.)

Avoid Paying Interest for Medical Costs

Most hospitals and medical providers will accept credit cards for services rendered. The issue is that the interest costs associated with these forms of payment can be exorbitantly high. Many medical providers and hospitals have payment plans available that will forego interest and allow you to pay a more reasonable amount. Before you go paying off a bill by using a high interest credit card or loan, check into alternative payment options. Interest adds up quickly and should be avoided if at all possible.

Ask for Alternatives

Are five tests really necessary to determine what is going on? If the first one is positive, are the other four even necessary? Are there generic alternatives to that expensive prescription available that may save you money? All of these are important questions to ask your provider. There may be ways to save money without cutting corners or putting yourself in danger. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of your to doctor to ensure that you are getting the best care at the lowest possible price.

Think About Supplemental Insurance Options

Medicare covers some, but not all, of the costs of healthcare. That is why there are plenty of supplemental insurance options that you can opt into to help with medical costs. Research what coverage would best fit your health and lifestyle. Pick one that offers you the most comprehensive benefits and will fill the gap that Medicare doesn’t cover.
