Nursing homes and assisted care facilities are charged with keeping elderly loved ones safe and in the best health that they can. This means that they must live up to the highest of quality care standards. These standards are overseen by the state. Your state delegates these duties to several different agencies. You should know which agencies are responsible should you need to contact them with your concerns.

Ombudsman Program or Office

Your state will have an Ombudsman program. This is a federally mandated program that is there to protect patients of long term care facilities. There are typically regional offices all over the state that are there to work with residents and their families. They help to resolve complaints, advocate for improved quality care and helping support a patient’s rights.

Department of Health

Nursing homes are subject to a similar set of standards that hospitals are required to follow. This means that they are subject to inspections and standards that are enforced by the department of health. While these standards may vary state to state, any issues can be reported to the department of health and they will subject violators to fines, penalties or even closure for severe issues.

Additional Programs

Many states have additional programs that will assist with elder care. These are often called the “Department of Aging” or something similar. They can handle a wide range of services like community adult daycare and taxies for seniors.
