Even if your days of retirement are off in the distant future, there are steps you can take to protect yourself from abuse, neglect and exploitation now. Share this information with any seniors in your life, and help protect them from being one of the millions of elders that face abuse and neglect each year.
Plan for Your Future
- Find a professional you can trust to help you put your estate plan in place. Things to consider include:
- A living will
- A revocable trust
- A durable power of attorney for healthcare and/or asset management
- Co-powers of attorneys
- Plan your finances. Consider:
- Direct deposit for your retirement, Social Security, SSI, or disability income
- Hiring a professional daily money manager if managing your finances is becoming difficult. A professional is often safer than a family member or friend.
Don’t Be Afraid to Report!
Many instances of abuse and neglect go uncovered because of pride, shame or fear. There is nothing shameful or embarrassing about standing up for yourself or someone you know who is a victim of elder abuse. If the abuse is coming at the hands of a friend or relative caregiver, reach out to a professional by calling 911, alerting your healthcare provider or contacting Adult Protective Services. If the abuse or neglect is happening at a nursing home, the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program can help.
