Having someone that can act for you when you are unable to is the whole reason for drawing up a power of attorney. Are you in danger of having your representative not be allowed to speak on your behalf with some agencies? Banks, investment houses and other agencies may not accept your representative due to liability concerns. So how can you make sure this doesn’t happen?

Ways to Word your Power of Attorney Document

When working with your legal representation you may wish to word your power of attorney document to decrease the odds of it not being accepted by doing the following:

  • Make sure that any forms your banks or other agencies have are properly filled out in advance. Agencies may not accept another agent until this step is done.
  • Make sure you have an updated power of attorney document. If you have a recent document, as well as a history of previous power attorney document, this can be used as proof of your wishes to have this person be your representative.
  • Grant general powers in your document instead of specific ones. The more specific the granted powers, the more chances that the agency will interpret them in the most restrictive way possible.
  • Have several signed copies so that all of your agencies can have a copy to review.
